Bulgaria joined the Istanbul Convention against Violence against Women

At a ceremony in the presence of the Secretary General of the Council of Europe, Torbjorn Jagland, on 21 April 2016 in Sofia Minister of Justice Ekaterina Zaharieva signed the Istanbul Convention against Violence against Women and Domestic Violence. Following our decision to accede to the Convention, Bulgaria will participate in taking serious measures to prevent and tackle all forms of gender-based violence.

The Istanbul Convention, also called the Council of Europe Convention on the Prevention and Combating of Violence against Women and Domestic Violence, was proposed for signature on 11 May 2011 in Istanbul. It comes into force on August 1, 2014, and the document has been approved by 38 countries, 24 of which are members of the European Union.
